This little gem comes from a theater\u2019s prop collection, and I have no idea how many times it\u2019s been painted or repainted during its career as a prop. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The full description can be found below the video and a list of the products used at the end of this article.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"B\u00e4nkchen Makeover mit Dixiebelle Terra Clay Paints &amp; WoodUbend Mouldings\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nN_Eksp5kdw?list=PLAlchv6aMw1HOIOn5Y66UQ36rZ-osCS0V\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, what are we waiting for? Roll up your sleeves and start by giving it a thorough cleaning with <a href=\"http:\/\/elfen-und-helden.de\/product\/set-projektvorbereitung-reinigung-dixie-belle-terra-clean-reinigungspulver\/\" data-type=\"product\" data-id=\"209212\">White Lightning<\/a>. Then I tried to tackle all those layers of paint. Paint stripper, sanding, paint stripper, sanding\u2026 and cleaning it again. I couldn\u2019t get it all off\u2014so we\u2019ll just have to work with what we\u2019ve got.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since I have a light color in mind for this project and noticed while cleaning that the wood releases tannins, I started by applying a coat of Dixie Belle\u2019s B.O.S.S. Transparent. <a href=\"http:\/\/elfen-und-helden.de\/product\/dixie-belle-b-o-s-s-2\/\" data-type=\"product\" data-id=\"169287\">B.O.S.S.<\/a> is a water-based sealer used to block any discoloration or odors that might show through. Personally, I find it easy to work with. <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 40%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, there is almost no project without my beloved WoodUbends. Today I use the <a href=\"http:\/\/elfen-und-helden.de\/product\/wood-u-bend-1520-decorative-pair-paar\/\" data-type=\"product\" data-id=\"176131\">ornament set WUB1520<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/elfen-und-helden.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/WUB1520C-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-187842 size-full\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those who aren\u2019t familiar with WoodUbend yet: These decorative elements are made from wood dust. When cold, they can be worked much like wood\u2014for example, by sawing, sanding, or drilling. When heated, they become flexible and can thus be shaped to fit the project. Depending on the project, I use a hair dryer, a heat gun, or an embossing gun to heat them.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WoodUbends can be painted or treated with wood stain. Whether you decorate them before or after installing them depends entirely on your project and the desired result. <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 40%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After heating the WoodUbend with a hot air gun, I apply a even coat of suitable wood glue to the back. I prefer to use <a href=\"http:\/\/elfen-und-helden.de\/product\/titebond-quick-thick-kleber\/\">Titebond Quick &amp; Thick<\/a>. For my projects, I especially like its strong initial adhesion, because it keeps the embellishment from slipping off vertical surfaces as easily while I\u2019m working on it.  <\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/elfen-und-helden.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/C2926062-481A-4FE3-A836-EF8875353E70-1024x884.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-210526 size-full\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once I&#8217;ve coated the back thoroughly with glue, I press the ornament onto my project and, if necessary, warm it up again so it becomes flexible. This allows me to adjust the edges nicely to the shape of the surface. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s exactly what I love so much about WoodUbend. The embellishments also come in many different shapes and sizes\u2014from small decorations and scrolls to long strips.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I immediately wipe away any excess glue that oozes out from the sides with a damp cloth or brush.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today I\u2019m working with Dixie Belle\u2019s Terra Clay Paints. Terra Clay Paints are water-based and contain clay particles. What makes these paints special is that they can be reactivated with water as long as they haven\u2019t been sealed yet. They\u2019re also not self-leveling\u2014so brush strokes and textures remain intentionally visible. These are exactly the qualities I particularly love for creative techniques.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, I\u2019ve once again set my mind on a shade that Terras doesn\u2019t offer as a ready-mixed color: a color that\u2019s similar to the <a href=\"http:\/\/elfen-und-helden.de\/product\/dixiebelle-chalk-mineral-paint-apricot\/\" data-type=\"product\" data-id=\"130484\">\u201cApricot\u201d<\/a> from the Chalk Mineral Paint line.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:40% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/elfen-und-helden.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/4271B49B-905C-4A23-BC41-600D81324787-1024x708.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-210528 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the colors can be mixed together, I simply mix my own custom shade. To do this, I use the Terra Clay Paint colors <a href=\"http:\/\/elfen-und-helden.de\/product\/dixie-belle-terra-clay-paint-bougainvillea\/\" data-type=\"product\" data-id=\"206278\">Bougainvillea<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/elfen-und-helden.de\/product\/dixie-belle-terra-clay-paint-daffodil\/\" data-type=\"product\" data-id=\"206280\">Daffodil<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/elfen-und-helden.de\/product\/dixie-belle-terra-clay-paint-prairie-dawn\/\" data-type=\"product\" data-id=\"206291\">Prairie Dawn<\/a>. I mix these three together until I\u2019m happy with the shade. For this project, I used about two parts Daffodil, two parts Prairie Dawn, and one part Bougainvillea.   <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For painting this time, I&#8217;m choosing the <a href=\"http:\/\/elfen-und-helden.de\/product\/dixie-belle-pinsel-la-petite-brush\/\" data-type=\"product\" data-id=\"180173\">La Petite Brush<\/a> from Dixie Belle, a brush with a mix of natural and synthetic bristles.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I like to work with a damp brush and start by painting the entire bench\u2014top, bottom, and all around\u2014with my mixed paint. For the harder-to-reach spots, I use a Da Vinci artist\u2019s brush. On the base and around the WoodUbends on the sides, I add a small highlight with Prairie Dawn.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After letting the paint dry overnight, it\u2019s time for the second coat\u2014even though the first one actually provided enough coverage. This time, I\u2019m using Dixie Belle\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/elfen-und-helden.de\/product\/dixie-belle-pinsel-best-dang-brush\/\" data-type=\"product\" data-id=\"180167\">Best Dang Brush<\/a> with Prairie Dawn for the highlights. With this project, I\u2019m using it to create a cloudy, irregular, and slightly faded effect.  <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 40%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once everything has dried, that\u2019s when the fun really begins. That\u2019s when <a href=\"http:\/\/elfen-und-helden.de\/product\/dixie-belle-terra-clay-paint-galaxy\/\" data-type=\"product\" data-id=\"206283\">Galaxy<\/a>\u2014a deep, dark shade of green\u2014comes into play. For this effect, I mixed vinegar with water in my <a href=\"http:\/\/elfen-und-helden.de\/product\/dixie-belle-fine-mist-continuous-spray-bottle\/\" data-type=\"product\" data-id=\"131137\">spray bottle<\/a>. In my project, this mixture alters the flow of the still-unsealed Terra Clay Paint and creates a coagulated-looking effect.   <\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/elfen-und-helden.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/92B770A5-DB4F-4482-A11B-3EA56438857B-975x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-210535 size-full\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, I spray the relevant areas with the vinegar mixture. To apply Galaxy, I use the <a href=\"http:\/\/elfen-und-helden.de\/product\/dixie-belle-mud-spatula\/\" data-type=\"product\" data-id=\"131119\">Mud Spatula<\/a> from Dixie Belle. I pick up a small amount of paint with the front edge and pull the spatula with the paint at a flat angle from the corners and along the edges\u2014anywhere I want to create a distressed look. I do this around the ornament as well. I hardly touch the surface at all while doing this. To help the paint flow a little more, I give it a little nudge with my vinegar mixture and my fingers \ud83d\ude09.     <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mud Spatula is made of plastic. I\u2019ll use it again in the next step, this time with Prairie Dawn and without vinegar water. I apply the paint unevenly and in patches over the bench to create a peeling look. I spread it thinly in various spots until it almost dries out. This creates areas with varying degrees of coverage.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After that, I let it dry again. Since Terra Clay Paints can be reactivated with water as long as they aren\u2019t sealed, I seal a design layer as soon as I\u2019m satisfied with that stage and don\u2019t want to change it anymore. After that, I can build up additional layers of paint without reactivating the design underneath with water.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this case, I\u2019m not only satisfied with the current result, but I\u2019ve also planned to continue working with a transfer from Belles &amp; Whistles. Since application instructions may vary depending on the transfer, please always follow the manufacturer\u2019s instructions. Before applying the transfer, I sealed the Terra Clay Paint with <a href=\"http:\/\/elfen-und-helden.de\/product\/dixie-belle-terra-clay-paint-terra-seal-matte\/\" data-type=\"product\" data-id=\"206295\">Terra Seal<\/a> and then let it dry.  <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:40% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/elfen-und-helden.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/8BCA0998-F040-405A-BFB6-2A6053095E43-1024x831.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-210541 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I chose the<a href=\"http:\/\/elfen-und-helden.de\/product\/belles-whistles-cotton-and-eucalyptus-61-x-81-cm\/\" data-type=\"product\" data-id=\"190096\">\u201cCotton and Eucalyptus\u201d<\/a>transfer, which features eucalyptus leaves and cotton blossoms. The individual motifs can be applied as a whole, in parts, or combined with one another. Thanks to the thin transfer film, the motif appears to be very tightly bonded to the surface after application.  <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The thicker, milky film you see here is the backing film. Using the included scraper or transfer stick, I peel the design off the backing film piece by piece and transfer it to my project. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think about where you want to place the design beforehand. Once the transfer sheet is on the surface, I try not to move it anymore. Parts of the design may already be adhering to the surface and could be damaged if you lift it again.  <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 40%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you look closely, you&#8217;ll see that I&#8217;m rubbing with one hand and gently lifting the backing sheet with the other. That way, I can clearly see whether the transfer has already been applied to the project. If any part is still sticking to the backing sheet, I put it back down and rub over it again until every last bit has been transferred.  <\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/elfen-und-helden.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/B2A60482-5EB6-49DD-9108-F09B17D951ED-1024x782.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-210543 size-full\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I work my way from one end to the other. Working from the center outward also works well for me. If you work from both outer edges toward the center, a crease can form more easily.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the way, I only used a small portion of the transfer for this project\u2014so there&#8217;s still plenty left over for future projects.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the transfer has completely peeled off the backing sheet and is lying on the project, I take the backing sheet and gently rub it over the design one more time. Of course, you can also do this with your hands. I usually avoid doing this because I often have hand cream on\u2014and hand cream and painting projects aren\u2019t exactly the best of friends. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:40% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"925\" height=\"884\" src=\"https:\/\/elfen-und-helden.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/03989564-7279-42B5-942C-A60DCB446946-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-210545 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/elfen-und-helden.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/03989564-7279-42B5-942C-A60DCB446946-1.jpeg 925w, https:\/\/elfen-und-helden.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/03989564-7279-42B5-942C-A60DCB446946-1-300x287.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/elfen-und-helden.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/03989564-7279-42B5-942C-A60DCB446946-1-768x734.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/elfen-und-helden.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/03989564-7279-42B5-942C-A60DCB446946-1-600x573.jpeg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 925px) 100vw, 925px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, I use the Dixie Belle <a href=\"http:\/\/elfen-und-helden.de\/product\/dixie-belle-finishing-pad\/\" data-type=\"product\" data-id=\"131131\">Finishing Pad<\/a> to gently press the transparent edges of the transfer\u2014in particular\u2014against the surface once more.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the end, I sealed the little bench with <a href=\"http:\/\/elfen-und-helden.de\/product\/dixie-belle-terra-clay-paint-terra-tuff-satin\/\" data-type=\"product\" data-id=\"207044\">Terra Tuff<\/a>. This protects the finish, and my old theater bench is now ready for its new role in my home. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I hope you enjoyed it and that it maybe even inspired you a little.
