Annie Sloan Chalk Paint™ is the original chalk paint for furniture and creative surfaces, developed in 1990, which changed the world of decorative furniture design. Chalk Paint™ has stood for uncomplicated working, creative freedom and long-lasting results for over three decades.
The special thing about Chalk Paint™ is its extraordinary versatility. In most cases, no preparation is necessary. Sanding or priming is almost always unnecessary. You open the can, take the brush and can start painting straight away. It is precisely this simplicity that makes Chalk Paint™ so popular with both beginners and experienced furniture artists.
The paint adheres reliably to almost all surfaces. This includes wood, metal, melamine, laminate, concrete, stone, glass and even fabric. Chalk Paint™ can be used indoors as well as outdoors, provided it is then sealed with a suitable protective product.
Chalk Paint™ is more than just a furniture chalk paint. It enables a variety of different styles. From modern, smooth surfaces and clear color concepts to authentic vintage and shabby looks. It can also be used to stylishly transform furniture that has been subjected to heavy wear or is getting on in years without losing its character.
After painting, Chalk Paint™ is sealed to protect the surface permanently. Wax creates a velvety, warm surface with depth, which can appear matt or slightly glossy depending on the polish. For heavily used furniture, floors or outdoor furniture, a robust water-based varnish is suitable and offers additional protection against moisture and UV radiation.
The Chalk Paint™ color palette ranges from soft, powdery shades to bold, expressive hues. The colors are designed so that they can be mixed together perfectly. Many shades deliberately contain no black pigment, which produces clear, clean color results when mixed.
Light shades such as Old White or Pure are suitable for lightening. Pure provides a clear, fresh result, while Old White gives a softer, more classic character. Individual color nuances and personal favorite colors can be developed through simple experimentation.
Chalk Paint™ is water-based, has a low odor and contains only small amounts of volatile organic compounds. It is ideally suited for indoor use and has no negative impact on indoor air. The paint is certified as safe for toys and contains no harmful ingredients. This makes it ideal for family furniture, children’s rooms and living rooms.
All Chalk Paint™ colors are produced sustainably. Production takes place under high quality and environmental standards. The paint cans are fully recyclable and can be recycled indefinitely.
A central idea behind Chalk Paint™ is upcycling. Furniture is not disposed of, but rethought. By redesigning existing pieces, resources are conserved, waste is avoided and unique one-offs are created. At the same time, the need for new furniture is reduced and so is the ecological footprint.
The high opacity and durability of Chalk Paint™ ensure that surfaces remain beautiful for a long time and are easy to clean. In many cases, repainting is not necessary for years, which also saves material and time.
Each can of Chalk Paint™ contains a pigment-rich formula with excellent coverage, reliable adhesion and a surface that can be customized. Chalk Paint™ is a paint for people who want to transform rather than replace furniture. For all those who value creativity, quality and sustainable design.
Project preparation
Chalk Paint™ is designed to make it as easy as possible for you to get started. In most cases, you can save yourself time-consuming sanding or priming. This is exactly what makes this color so popular with those who prefer to design rather than prepare.
It is only important that the surface is dry, dust-free and free of loose residue. Heavily soiled furniture can be cleaned with clean water. Deliberately avoid aggressive cleaners or degreasers, as these can activate old surfaces and affect the subsequent color appearance.
For very dark, oily or heavily stained wood – such as furniture from the 1930s or 1940s or untreated pine – it may be advisable to work with a suitable barrier primer or shellac beforehand. This will prevent discoloration from seeping through the paint.
High-gloss, varnished or very smooth surfaces only need a light hand sanding to give the paint a good hold. More preparation is generally not necessary.
As with any creative project, the same applies here: A quick test coat on an inconspicuous area will give you confidence – especially with light colors.
Application
Chalk Paint™ is applied directly from the can. Stir well before painting so that the pigments are evenly distributed. If the paint is very thick, you can dilute it with a little water – often just a small sip is enough.
The paint adheres reliably to almost all surfaces: Wood, metal, melamine, laminate, stone, concrete, glass and even fabric. Depending on the color, substrate and desired look, one or two coats are usually sufficient.
Flat brushes or rollers are suitable for a smooth, modern finish. If you want more texture, vibrancy or a deliberately handcrafted look, Chalk Paint™ brushes are ideal. They leave visible, characterful brushstrokes that give the furniture depth and expression.
Chalk Paint™ dries quickly and allows you to work quickly. You can often continue working on your project the same day or even seal it.
Whether clear and modern, gently aged, rustic or elegant – Chalk Paint™ adapts to your style, not the other way around.
Sealing
Chalk Paint™ is always sealed after painting. This step protects the surface and determines the feel, look and everyday usability of your piece of furniture.
Chalk Paint™ Wax creates a warm, velvety surface with depth. The color appears slightly more intense and, depending on the polish, can appear matt to silky glossy. Wax is particularly suitable for furniture with low to medium wear and tear and for anyone who loves a natural, handcrafted surface.
Chalk Paint™ Lacquer is recommended for heavy-duty surfaces such as dining tables, kitchen furniture, floors or outdoor furniture. This water-based lacquer is robust, waterproof and contains UV protection. It reliably preserves the color in everyday life.
Waxed surfaces feel dry quickly, but require a curing time of up to 21 days. You should treat your furniture a little more carefully during this phase. The surface is then resilient and durable.
The right sealant ensures that your project not only looks beautiful, but that you can enjoy it for a long time.
Care
Chalk Paint™ surfaces are easy to clean and suitable for everyday use if they have been properly sealed. A dry or slightly damp microfiber cloth is usually sufficient for regular cleaning.
On waxed furniture, heavier traces of use can often be removed with a little clear Chalk Paint™ Wax on a soft cloth. The wax acts like a gentle eraser and refreshes the surface at the same time.
Avoid aggressive cleaners, alcohol or sprays with solvents, as they can attack the wax layer. Frequent use of household cleaners can also lead to a surface needing to be re-waxed at some point.
Use coasters, felt pads and heat protection to protect your furniture in the long term. Chalk Paint™ surfaces don’t like extreme heat, high humidity or strong temperature fluctuations any more than we do.
The beauty of Chalk Paint™ is that small marks are part of it. And if you want, they can be easily repaired at any time or deliberately integrated into the character of the furniture.
