IOD transfers – wafer-thin adhesive films full of creativity: These transfers, also known as scratch-off transfers or furniture transfers, transform your furniture, walls and accessories into true works of art. Thanks to their wafer-thin texture, they literally melt into the surface and leave a seamless finish.
They can be used in a variety of ways: Whether on painted projects or directly on materials such as ceramics, glass, metal or plastic – IOD transfers offer unlimited possibilities.
Easy to use – impressive results, just like hand-painted: With just a few simple steps, you can achieve professional and detailed designs that look as if you had painted them yourself.

Preparation

Surface preparation for transfers (furniture transfers, scratch-off transfers, self-adhesive films):

Thoroughly clean the surface of dust, grease and old residue to create a clean base.
In the case of wood or furniture, it is advisable to smooth out any unevenness by sanding and create a smooth surface before painting.
Transfers can be applied over objects painted with a wide variety of paints (chalk paints, clay paints, acrylic paints, etc.) or directly onto smooth surfaces such as glass, metal, ceramic or plastic. On painted surfaces, the paint should be completely dry and hardened.
For best adhesion, we recommend sealing the surface with a high-quality, water-based polyurethane sealer in a matt finish before applying the transfer. Especially if the paint is very porous.
Attention! Do not apply wax before applying the transfer
When working directly on surfaces such as glass, metal, ceramic or plastic, the surface must be dry and free of grease and dust. The best way to clean them is with alcohol.

Application

Step-by-step instructions for using IOP transfers:

Preparation of the surface:
- Make sure that the surface is clean, dry and free of dust, grease or other contaminants. If necessary, use alcohol or a special cleaner to thoroughly remove all residues.
- For painted surfaces, the paint should be completely dry and hardened.
- For best adhesion, we recommend sealing the surface with a high-quality, water-based polyurethane sealer in a matt finish before applying the transfer.
Selection and cropping of the transfer:
- Select the desired transfer motif and cut it to size if required.
- It is possible to cut off parts of the transfer and place them individually to create a unique design.
Attaching the transfer:
- Carefully remove the protective film on the back of the transfer without touching the adhesive side.
- Position the transfer on the desired area of the surface. Once placed, the transfer is difficult to reposition without possibly damaging the design. Make sure to adjust the design precisely before fixing.
- Use the application tool provided or a similar object to rub the transfer firmly onto the surface. Start at one corner and work your way evenly over the entire motif.
Remove the backing film:
- Carefully lift off the transparent backing film. If part of the transfer does not adhere, put the film back and rub over it again until the entire motif has been transferred.
Post-processing:
- After application, the transfer can be carefully polished with a soft cloth to ensure that it adheres completely and any air bubbles are removed.
- With the Dixiebelle Finishing Pad or Burnishing Pad, you can massage in and fuse the edges of the motif in particular, achieving a seamless result.
- Optionally, the transfer can be lightly sanded to achieve a vintage or used look.
Sealing:
- To protect the transfer and increase durability, it is advisable to apply a final coat of a water-based sealer. Matt or glossy sealers can be selected depending on the desired effect.

Tips:

IOD transfers can be applied to various surfaces such as wood, metal, glass, ceramics and painted surfaces.

Sealing

Patience is required after the last brushstroke:

Allow your project a longer drying time of 24 hours or at least overnight. This resting time is crucial for the transfer to set perfectly on the surface and for your work to turn out flawlessly.

Protection for your work:

Transfer films require a reliable seal for a long shelf life.

Paint options for your protection:

Matt: For a modern, discreet look.
Satin finish: A touch of elegance with a subtle sheen.
Glossy: For an eye-catching, elegant look.

An additional protective layer is essential for projects that are subject to heavy use or moisture. Suitable varnishes for this are Extra Coat or Gator Hidewhich guarantee maximum robustness and moisture resistance.

But be careful! Some varnishes that provide extra protection against moisture or develop extra hard surfaces, such as Gator Hide or Extra Coat, can react with the adhesive of the transfer and possibly dissolve! If you want to give your work extra protection, first seal it with a normal top coat and once this has dried, apply Gator Hide or Extra Coat on top.

With careful sealing, your project finished with a transfer will remain durable, resistant and a real eye-catcher!

Care

Easy-care and durable: your transfer film project will stay beautiful for a long time!

Your favorite piece finished with the transfer technique deserves a little attention even after sealing to stay as radiantly beautiful as on the first day. Here are a few simple tips for the right care:

1. gentle cleaning

Avoid aggressive cleaning agents or scouring pads – these could damage the seal.
In most cases, a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth is completely sufficient to remove dust or stains. For heavier soiling, you can use a mild soap solution.

2. protection from moisture

For objects in permanently damp environments (e.g. kitchen or bathroom), additional sealing with a suitable lacquer is recommended.
Do not leave spilled liquids for long and wipe them up immediately to avoid possible damage.

3. no extreme load

For everyday furniture, we recommend using felt glides under heavy objects or decorations to prevent pressure marks.

4. refresh if necessary

If the surface loses its shine over time, you can carefully polish it with a soft cloth or apply a new layer of sealant to renew the protection.

5. protection from sunlight

Direct and prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause the colors of your transfer film project to fade.
To avoid this, set up your project in a place that is not constantly exposed to the sun or use UV-resistant sealants to protect the colors in the long term.
