A1 Artists First Transfers are scratch-off transfers for creatively decorating a variety of surfaces. Depending on the project, the individual designs can be used together or separately and arranged as desired.

Perfect for furniture, home decor, and other creative projects that you want to give a floral, eye-catching touch.

Surface preparation for transfers (furniture transfers, scratch-off transfers, self-adhesive films):

  • Clean the surface thoroughly to remove dust, grease and old residues.
  • For wood or furniture, it is recommended to sand down any uneven areas before painting.
  • Transfers can be applied to objects painted with chalk paint, clay paint, acrylic paint, or other suitable paints, as well as directly onto smooth surfaces such as glass, metal, ceramic, or plastic. For painted surfaces, the paint should be completely dry and cured.
  • For porous paint finishes, it may be advisable to seal the surface with a water-based, matte-finishpolyurethane sealer before applying the transfer.
  • Caution: Do not use wax before applying the transfer.
  • For glass, metal, ceramic, or plastic, the surface must be dry and free of grease and dust. Depending on the surface, alcohol, for example, can be used for cleaning.

Step-by-step instructions for using A1 Transfers:

  1. Preparation of the surface:
    • The surface should be clean, dry, and free of dust, grease, and other residues. If necessary, use a suitable cleaner or—if appropriate for the surface in question—alcohol.
    • For painted or varnished surfaces, the paint should be completely dry and cured.
    • For porous paint finishes, it may be advisable to seal the surface with a water-based, matte-finish polyurethane sealer before applying the transfer.
  2. Selection and cropping of the transfer:
    • Select the desired transfer motif and cut it to size if required.
    • Individual parts of the transfer can be cut out and placed wherever you like, so you can customize your design exactly as you envision it.
  3. Attaching the transfer:
    • Carefully remove the protective film from the back of the transfer without touching the adhesive side unnecessarily.
    • Position the transfer where you want it. Since it’s difficult to reposition once it’s been applied, you should check the placement carefully beforehand.
    • Use the included application tool or a suitable tool to rub the transfer onto the surface. Start at one corner and work evenly across the entire design.
  4. Remove the backing film:
    • Carefully lift the transparent backing film. If part of the transfer has not yet been applied, replace the film and rub over that area again.
  5. Post-processing:
    • After transferring the design, you can gently stroke over it with a soft cloth and press down on the edges in particular.
    • The Dixie Belle Finishing Pad or Burnishing Pad is especially useful for carefully blending the edges of the design into the surface.
    • Optionally, the transfer can be lightly sanded to create a vintage or worn look.
  6. Sealing:
    • Depending on the project and the expected wear and tear, the transfer can be protected with a water-based sealer. Depending on the desired finish, you can choose, for example, a matte or glossy option.

Tips:

  • Depending on the substrate and proper preparation, A1 transfers are suitable for various surfaces, such as wood, metal, glass, ceramics, and painted or varnished surfaces.

Once the decal has been applied, you’ll need to be patient:

After applying the transfer, let your project sit for at least 24 hours or overnight before continuing with further processing or sealing.

Protection for your work:

Depending on the project and the level of wear and tear, it is recommended to apply a suitable sealant to provide additional protection for the finished surface.

The perfect finish:

  • Matt: For a modern, understated look.
  • Satin finish: For a subtle sheen.
  • Glossy: For an expressive, glossy finish.

For projects subject to heavier wear or surfaces that may come into contact with moisture, the sealant should be selected based on the specific application. Depending on the project, suitable options include, for example, Extra Coat or Gator Hide be suitable.

But be careful! Gator Hide and Extra Coat can react with the adhesive layer of the transfer when applied directly to it, causing parts of the transfer to peel off. If you want to use one of these sealants, first apply a suitable standard top coat. Let it dry or cure according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and then apply Gator Hide or Extra Coat.

By using a sealant tailored to your specific project, you can provide additional protection for the finished surface and give your transfer project the desired finish.

Care Tips for Your Transfer Film Project

With the right care, you can protect the surface of your favorite item—decorated with transfer foil—and enjoy it for a long time.

1. gentle cleaning

  • Avoid harsh cleaning products and scouring pads, as these can damage the sealant.
  • For dust and light soiling, a soft, dry, or slightly damp cloth is usually sufficient. For heavier soiling, you can use a mild soap solution.

2. protection from moisture

  • For surfaces in areas with high humidity, such as the kitchen or bathroom, a sealant suitable for the specific substrate and application should be used.
  • Wipe up spilled liquids as soon as possible.

3. Protect the surface from damage

  • On furniture surfaces, felt glides placed under heavy objects or decorations can help prevent dents and scratches.

4. refresh if necessary

  • Depending on the type of sealant used and the level of wear and tear, the surface can be carefully cleaned or re-treated with a suitable sealant as needed. Be sure to follow the application instructions for the specific product.

5. Protection from direct sunlight

  • Prolonged, intense exposure to sunlight can cause colors and surfaces to change over time.
  • If possible, do not place your project in direct sunlight for extended periods. When choosing an additional sealant, follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

With these simple care tips, your custom transfer foil project will remain a real eye-catcher. You can find more inspiration and materials for your DIY projects in our online store.
