Versailles is a soft yellow-green shade with a historical feel. This Chalk Paint™ color by Annie Sloan is inspired by delicate French furniture and gilded doors. Versailles has a light and understated look and is particularly well-suited for classic furniture with subtle colors. Depending on how it’s paired with neighboring colors, the shade can appear different. White, gray, and gold tones combine particularly well with Versailles; the shade also offers versatile design possibilities in modern interiors.
Annie Sloan Chalk Paint™ was developed in 1990 by Annie Sloan for decorating furniture and other suitable surfaces. This water-based paint offers countless possibilities for custom furniture and creative projects.
Depending on the surface, Chalk Paint™ can often be applied with relatively little preparation. However, the surface and condition of each project should be checked before painting and prepared accordingly if necessary.
Chalk Paint™ can be used on a variety of suitable surfaces, including wood, metal, and various previously painted or coated surfaces. The preparation required depends on the specific surface and its condition.
Chalk Paint™ offers many possibilities for custom designs, especially when upcycling furniture—from smooth surfaces to vintage, shabby, and patina effects. The number of coats required may vary depending on the color, surface, and desired result.
Please note that the colors displayed on your screen may vary depending on the screen resolution and color reproduction. It can therefore not be guaranteed that the shades of the colors appear exactly as shown online.

Project preparation
Depending on the surface, Chalk Paint™ can often be applied with relatively little preparation. Nevertheless, it’s worth taking a close look at the surface before painting—because proper preparation always depends on the material and condition of the piece of furniture in question.
The surface should be clean, dry, dust-free, and free of grease, wax, and any loose or unstable residues. Dirty surfaces should be cleaned with a cleaning agent suitable for the specific substrate before painting and then prepared according to the application instructions.
For woods from which substances, odors, or discoloration may seep through, a suitable sealer may be necessary. This applies, for example, to certain older pieces of furniture, heavily stained or odor-laden surfaces, and some untreated woods.
Very smooth, glossy, or coated surfaces should be inspected particularly carefully before painting. Depending on the substrate, sanding and/or a suitable primer may be necessary to ensure that subsequent coats of paint can be applied reliably.
If you’re working with an unknown surface or if you’re unsure, we recommend applying a test coat to an inconspicuous area. This will allow you to check whether any additional preparatory steps are needed before you begin the full project.
Application
Stir Chalk Paint™ thoroughly before painting to ensure the ingredients are evenly distributed. Depending on the desired finish, the paint can be thinned with a little water if necessary. Add water gradually until the desired consistency is reached.
Chalk Paint™ can be used on a variety of suitable surfaces, including wood, metal, and various previously painted or coated surfaces. Whether preparation is required—and, if so, what kind—depends on the specific surface and its condition. The number of coats required may also vary depending on the color, the surface, and the desired result.
For smoother finishes, you can use flat brushes or rollers, for example. With Chalk Paint™ brushes, on the other hand, you can intentionally create visible brush strokes and more textured finishes. This way, you can tailor the design to the desired style of your project.
Allow Chalk Paint™ to dry thoroughly before applying another coat, continuing to work on the surface, or sealing it. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s current instructions regarding drying and recoating times.
From smooth, modern finishes to vintage, shabby, or patina effects, Chalk Paint™ offers countless possibilities for customizing your projects.
Sealing
After painting, Chalk Paint™ can be sealed with a suitable wax or varnish, depending on the project and the intended use. The choice of finish affects the look, feel, and properties of the finished surface.
Chalk Paint™ Wax creates a velvety finish with visual depth. This can make the color appear slightly more intense and, depending on the application and polishing, range from matte to slightly glossy. Different waxes also allow for decorative effects and custom finishes.
For projects where a lacquer finish is desired or makes sense based on the project’s intended use, Chalk Paint™ Lacquer can be used. This water-based lacquer is available in a variety of finishes. When selecting, using, and determining the scope of application, follow the manufacturer’s current instructions.
Waxed and lacquered surfaces need sufficient time to dry and cure after treatment. Handle the piece of furniture with care during this time and follow the manufacturer’s current instructions regarding drying and curing times.
By choosing a sealant that’s suitable for your specific project and its intended use, you can provide additional protection for the finished surface and give it the desired finish.
Care
Caring for surfaces finished with Chalk Paint™ depends on the sealer used and how much the piece of furniture is used. For regular cleaning, a dry or slightly damp, soft cloth is usually sufficient.
On waxed furniture, signs of wear can be touched up with a small amount of clear Chalk Paint™ Wax, depending on the type of surface. Apply the wax sparingly with a soft cloth, following the manufacturer’s current application instructions.
Avoid using harsh cleaners, alcohol, or solvent-based sprays on waxed surfaces, as these can damage the wax layer. Depending on usage and wear, it may be necessary to re-wax the surface later.
Coasters, felt pads, and appropriate heat protection help protect the finished surface from signs of wear and tear. Also, avoid extreme heat, high humidity, and significant temperature fluctuations.
Minor signs of wear can be touched up or intentionally incorporated into the character of the piece, depending on the surface and the finish used.
