Belles & Whistles Transfer: Buds & Branches

Delicate buds and elegant branches create a subtle botanical motif. These delicate elements are perfect for adding subtle accents as well as for larger floral arrangements on furniture and in decorative projects.

Belles & Whistles Transfers are thin rub-on transfers designed for decorating furniture, walls, and accessories. Depending on the surface and proper preparation, they can be used on painted surfaces as well as on ceramics, glass, metal, or plastic.

The designs are transferred to the prepared surface and, depending on the design, can be used in their entirety or as individual elements. Individual areas can then be further embellished with paint or integrated into an existing furniture or creative project.

Surface preparation for transfers (furniture transfers, scratch-off transfers, self-adhesive films):

  • Clean the surface thoroughly to remove dust, grease and old residues.
  • For wooden items or pieces of furniture, any uneven areas can be smoothed out by sanding before painting, if necessary.
  • Transfers can be applied to objects painted with various types of paint, such as chalk paint, clay paint, or acrylic paint, as well as to suitable smooth surfaces. Any existing layers of paint or varnish should be completely dry or cured.
  • For very porous paint finishes, it may be advisable to seal the surface with a suitable water-basedpolyurethane sealer in a matte finish before applying the transfer.
  • Caution: Do not use wax before applying the transfer.
  • When applying directly to smooth surfaces such as glass, metal, ceramic, or plastic, the surface must be dry and free of dust and grease. Use a cleaning agent suitable for the specific surface.

Step-by-step instructions for using Belles & Whistles transfers:

  1. Preparation of the surface:
    • The surface should be clean, dry, and free of dust, grease, and other residues. If necessary, use a cleaning agent suitable for the specific surface.
    • For painted or varnished surfaces, the paint should be completely dry or cured.
    • For very porous paint finishes, it may be advisable to seal the surface with a suitable water-based polyurethane sealer in a matte finish before applying the transfer.
  2. Selection and cropping of the transfer:
    • Select the desired transfer motif and cut it to size if required.
    • Individual parts of the transfer can be cut out and arranged to suit the specific project.
  3. Attaching the transfer:
    • Carefully remove the protective film from the back of the transfer, taking care to avoid contact with the adhesive side as much as possible.
    • Position the transfer where you want it. Check the alignment carefully before securing it, as a transfer that is already adhered may not be able to be repositioned without being damaged.
    • Use the application tool provided or a suitable tool to rub the transfer onto the surface. Start at a corner, for example, and gradually work your way across the entire design.
  4. Remove the backing film:
    • Carefully and gradually peel off the transparent backing film. If part of the transfer has not yet been fully applied, replace the film and rub the affected area again.
  5. Post-processing:
    • After applying the transfer, you can gently press it down with a soft cloth and carefully go over the edges again, paying special attention to them.
    • Using the Dixie Belle Finishing Pad or Burnishing Pad, you can carefully blend the edges of the design into the surface.
    • Optionally, the transfer can be lightly sanded to create a vintage or worn look.
  6. Sealing:
    • Depending on the project and the anticipated wear and tear, the transfer can be protected with a suitable water-based sealer. Choose a finish that matches the desired result and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Patience is required after the last brushstroke:

After applying the transfer, let your project dry thoroughly before further processing or sealing the surface. The required drying time depends on the type of transfer used and the manufacturer’s instructions.

Protection for your work:

Depending on the project, the surface, and the expected wear and tear, an additional sealant may be advisable. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for both the transfer and the sealant used.

Choose a finish that matches your project:

  • Matt: For a subtle, matte look.
  • Satin finish: For a subtle sheen.
  • Glossy: For a shinier finish.

For surfaces subject to heavier wear, suitable sealants such as Extra Coat or Gator Hide can be used. Always check that they are suitable for the specific transfer project and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

But be careful! Depending on the transfer and the adhesive used—or its composition—certain sealants may not be suitable. If you want to use a sealant that offers stronger protection, such as Gator Hide or Extra Coat, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding their use with transfers. If necessary, you can first apply a suitable top coat as an intermediate layer before applying the additional sealant.

By using a sealant that is suitable for the specific transfer, substrate, and future use, you can provide additional protection for the finished surface.

Care Tips for Your Transfer Film Project

With the right care, you can protect the surface decorated with transfer films and enjoy your project for a long time to come.

1. gentle cleaning

  • Avoid using harsh cleaning agents or scouring pads, as these can damage the transfer or an existing sealant.
  • For dust and light soiling, a soft, dry, or slightly damp cloth is usually sufficient. For heavier soiling, follow the care instructions for the sealant you are using.

2. protection from moisture

  • For items that frequently come into contact with moisture, the sealant should be selected based on the specific application. Be sure to follow the current manufacturer’s instructions for the product you are using.
  • Spilled liquids should be cleaned up as soon as possible.

3. Take wear and tear into account

  • For furniture surfaces, for example, felt pads placed under decorations or other objects can help reduce signs of wear and pressure marks.

4. refresh if necessary

  • Depending on the sealant used and the condition of the surface, it can be re-treated if necessary. Be sure to follow the current application instructions provided by the respective manufacturer.

5. protection from sunlight

  • Prolonged, intense exposure to sunlight can cause colors and surfaces to change over time.
  • If possible, the project should therefore not be exposed to intense direct sunlight for extended periods.
