Grace on Design’s decoupage papers were developed in the U.S. specifically for decoupage and mixed-media art. The designs are based on artwork and photography and offer countless possibilities for personalizing furniture, decorative items, and creative projects.

1. surface preparation for Grace on Design decoupage papers:

  • Thoroughly clean the surface of dust, grease, and other residue before you begin decoupage.
  • For wooden items or pieces of furniture, any unevenness can be smoothed out by sanding if necessary, and the surface can be prepared accordingly.
  • Depending on the material and condition of the substrate, applying a suitable primer may be advisable, for example, on porous, untreated, or problematic surfaces.
  • Grace on Design decoupage papers are semi-opaque. This means that the color of the background can affect the final color appearance of the design. On a light base, the colors generally appear more vibrant, while darker backgrounds can alter the effect accordingly. Make sure any previously applied base coat is completely dry before you begin decoupage.

Decoupage with Grace on Design – Step by Step

With these instructions, you can use Grace on Design decoupage papers for your furniture and craft projects:

1. material selection:

  • Choose a Grace on Design decoupage paper that matches the size and style of your project.
  • Gather all the materials you’ll need, such as a paintbrush, decoupage glue, scissors, plastic wrap, and a squeegee .

2. paper preparation:

  • Cut or tear the paper to size. For larger designs, you can split the motif into sections and arrange the individual sections to fit your project.
  • Place the paper on the surface first to check the position and orientation of the design.

3rd adhesive layer:

  • Apply an even coat of a suitable decoupage glue or sealer to the prepared surface. Depending on the product used, suitable sealants can also be used for this purpose.
  • Work according to the processing and drying times of the product you are using.
  • For longer papers, it can be helpful to work on them step by step, section by section.

4. paper application:

  • Carefully place the decoupage paper on the adhesive layer. Start at one side and work your way across slowly to avoid wrinkles and air bubbles as much as possible.
  • Gently smooth the paper with a soft brush, a squeegee , or crumpled plastic wrap.

How to Care for Your Decoupage Project

1. gentle cleaning

  • Avoid harsh cleaning products and scouring pads, as they can damage the surface or the sealant.
  • For dust and light soiling, a soft, dry, or slightly damp cloth is usually sufficient. For heavier soiling, follow the care instructions for the sealant you are using.

2. Dealing with Moisture

  • Whether and to what extent a decoupage project is suitable for areas with high humidity depends on the surface, adhesive, sealant, and intended use. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the products you are using.
  • Spilled liquids should be cleaned up as soon as possible and should not be left on the surface for an extended period of time.

3. Protect the surface from damage

  • If furniture surfaces are subject to heavy use, felt pads or coasters placed under decorative items and other objects can help reduce scratches and indentations.

4. refresh if necessary

  • If the surface shows signs of wear over time, the appropriate way to refresh it depends on the type of sealant originally used. Use only products that are compatible with each other, and follow the respective manufacturer’s instructions.

5. solar radiation

  • Prolonged, intense exposure to sunlight can cause visual changes in many materials and colors. Therefore, whenever possible, the designed object should not be permanently exposed to intense, direct sunlight.
