IOD Paint Inlays LITTLE LARK combines small songbirds with delicate flowers and soft colors to create a nostalgic, botanical design for romantic furniture and creative projects.

IOD Paint Inlays are a special decorative technique for furniture upcycling and creative surface design. Unlike adhesive transfers, the design’s color pigments are transferred directly into the paint layer while it is still wet. After removing the backing paper, the motif remains as an integral part of the painted layer.

The transferred pigments remain reactivable with water until sealed, allowing them to be blended or further modified during the design process. According to the manufacturer, IOD Paint Inlays can be used multiple times, although subsequent impressions may be weaker or more faded. A versatile technique for custom furniture upcycling, decorative accents, and creative projects.

Please note that the colors displayed on your screen may vary depending on the screen resolution and color reproduction. It can therefore not be guaranteed that the shades of the colors appear exactly as shown online.

IOD Paint Inlays Little Lark combines delicate songbirds, flowering branches, and botanical accents into a nostalgic botanical design. The Paint Inlay is ideal for upcycling furniture, home decor, and creative design projects. The set includes 8 pages, each measuring approximately 20.3 x 30.5 cm.

Surface preparation for IOD Paint inlays:

  • The surface must be clean, dry and free of dust and grease.
  • For this application, IOD recommends a chalk-like paint that does not contain polymers. With paints and coatings that contain polymers, the application process and results may vary.
  • Apply an even coat of paint, into which the Paint Inlay is embedded according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Work in manageable areas so that the paint retains the required open time while you’re working with it.
  • Plan your layout in advance and have all the materials you need ready.

Step-by-step application of the IOD Paint Inlays:

  1. Design planning:
    • Define the desired design in advance.
    • Cut the inlay sheets to size using the printed grid lines.
    • For patterns with a repeat, any excess edges can be trimmed so that the individual sheets fit together properly.
  2. Apply paint:
    • Apply a generous, even coat of a mineral chalk paint suitable for IOD Paint Inlays.
    • Work in sections; according to the manufacturer, ideally in areas no larger than approximately 30 × 40 cm.
  3. Insert inlay:
    • Place the inlay with the motif side down in the still wet paint.
    • You can tell which side is the back by the printed grid pattern.
    • Hold the sheet as taut as possible when placing it, and then make sure it doesn’t shift.
  4. Moisten & press on:
    • Lightly moisten the inlay with a fine mist of water.
    • Gently press or dab it with a damp sponge or silicone tool.
    • Apply light, even pressure as you work.
  5. Allow to dry:
    • Let the inlay dry for about 10 minutes to an hour, depending on the environmental conditions.
  6. Remove the paper:
    • Moisten the paper evenly and let the water soak in for about 30 seconds.
    • Then carefully peel off the paper at a shallow angle.
    • If it doesn’t come off easily, moisten it again and wait a little longer.
  7. Refine the design:
    • As long as the transferred pigments can still be reactivated with water, they can be carefully blended or smoothed out.
    • Depending on the desired design, additional colors can be incorporated into the layout.
  8. Final drying:
    • Allow your project to dry completely.
    • If the surface still feels cool, this may indicate that moisture is still present.
    • According to the manufacturer, the project should be allowed to dry for at least 24 hours before further work is done. The actual drying time may vary depending on the environment, the surface, and how the paint was applied.

Sealing after the application of IOD Paint Inlays:

  • Once the design has dried completely, it should be sealed according to the manufacturer’s instructions for IOD.
  • Depending on the project, suitable water-based sealants, fixing sprays, or wax can be used.
  • Since the transferred pigments can be reactivated with water, water-based sealants applied with a brush may slightly displace the pigments during the first application. Therefore, apply with light pressure and avoid repeated brushing over the area.
  • Alternatively, a suitable sealant can first be applied as a fine mist to set the design before applying another coat of sealant.
  • When using oil-based sealants, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and test the combination first on an inconspicuous area or a test surface.

Care & storage of IOD Paint Inlays:

  • Once the surface has been sealed, the care required for the finished surface depends on the paint, sealant, and type of use.
  • Clean painted and sealed surfaces with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth, and follow the care instructions for the sealing product you are using.
  • Avoid harsh cleaning products, abrasive materials, and excessive moisture.
  • Whether and how a sealant can be reapplied later depends on the product used. Please refer to the respective manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Unused IOD Paint Inlays should be stored in a dry place, laid flat, and kept in their original packaging.
  • Keep the inlay sheets completely dry until you are ready to use them.
  • After application, allow the sheet to dry completely on a flat surface with the pigment side up.
  • The protective paper can be placed between the individual sheets for storage.
  • Once they are completely dry, used Paint Inlays can be stored back in their packaging. According to the manufacturer, they can be reused, although the resulting imprint may be weaker or more faded.
