Michael Harding oil paints are handcrafted in England by the artist of the same name, using traditional methods. They stand out for their high pigment concentration and pleasantly buttery consistency.
The paints handle smoothly, offer controlled flow, and are suited to both glazing and impasto techniques. Most shades are ground with linseed oil, while selected white tones are made with safflower or walnut oil to achieve optimal color properties.
Please note that the colors displayed on your screen may vary depending on the screen resolution and color reproduction. It can therefore not be guaranteed that the shades of the colors will appear exactly as shown online.
Michael Harding oil paints are made in England. At the heart of every color is its pigment, processed in high concentration. Most colors are ground with linseed oil; selected white tones use other oils to specifically enhance their color properties.
Consistency, as well as flow and drying behavior, vary by pigment. This gives each shade its own character, allowing it to be used for glazing, opaque coverage, fine layers, or impasto, depending on the color.
Careful project preparation lays the groundwork for controlled paint application in oil painting. Before you even start painting, it’s worth aligning your surface, colors, and technique.
The surface should be suitable for oil painting and properly prepared. Canvas, wood, or painting panels are usually prepped with a suitable primer to ready the surface for further work and reduce excessive absorption of the binder into the base.
Choosing the right materials also plays a key role. Suitable oil paints, matching painting mediums, and clean tools make for easier, more controlled work. It’s a good idea to plan your color palette in advance, taking into account properties like transparency, pigment type, and oil content.
Thoughtful preparation makes the painting process easier, giving you the freedom to focus on color, expression, and your own artistic choices.
Working with oil paints thrives on patience, layering, and deliberate decisions. Depending on the technique, colors can be applied thin and glazed, opaque, or in heavy impasto. The properties of the pigments used, as well as their drying behavior, should be taken into account.
When working in multiple layers, the classic principle of “fat over lean” applies. Lower paint layers should be thinner and lower in oil, while subsequent layers may contain a higher oil content. This accounts for the different drying times and tension levels within the paint structure.
It’s worth allowing enough time between individual paint layers. Thin glazes can be reworked sooner, depending on pigment, layer thickness, and ambient conditions, while opaque or impasto layers need more time. The underlying layer should be sufficiently dry before applying the next one.
Suitable painting mediums can be used to specifically influence flow, transparency, sheen, or drying behavior. Choice, dosage, and application should follow the medium used and the respective manufacturer’s instructions.
Depending on the thickness of the layers, the pigments, the type of oil used, and environmental conditions, it may take a long time for an oil painting to dry completely. Varnishes should be applied according to the manufacturer’s instructions and only after the paint layers have dried sufficiently.
Sealing isn’t strictly necessary for oil paintings, but it can be worthwhile to protect the surface and even out the overall color effect. Whether and when an oil painting is sealed depends on the technique, layer structure, and desired surface finish.
No final varnish should be applied during the painting phase. Oil paints need time to fully cure. Varnishing too early can disrupt the drying process and lead to tension or clouding over time.
As a temporary solution, a retouching varnish can be used if needed. It’s ideal for temporarily saturating dull spots and offers light protection, while remaining removable. It should be used sparingly, and only once the paint layer is dry to the touch.
A final varnish should only be applied once the oil painting has fully cured. Depending on layer thickness, pigment, and oil content, this can take anywhere from several months to a year. A suitable final varnish can protect the surface from dust and dirt and even out the overall surface finish. Whether it offers UV protection depends on the product used — always check the manufacturer’s instructions.
Oil paintings should be handled and cared for properly. To protect the surface, it’s best to keep finished pieces away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and major temperature fluctuations.
A soft, dry cloth is usually enough for cleaning, gently removing dust. Avoid damp cloths, cleaning agents, or chemical substances, as they can damage the paint layer or any applied varnish.
Hanging the artwork framed or otherwise protected can help preserve it. If you’re unsure, or if more thorough cleaning is needed, it’s best to consult a restoration or conservation specialist.
Proper care helps preserve the colors and surface of the oil painting.
