MM3 Resin Oil Wax is a solvent-free, plant-based wax medium from Michael Harding that gives oil paints a rich, buttery consistency. It increases the paint application, creates a satin-matt surface and is particularly suitable for impasto and texture techniques.

MM3 Resin Oil Wax by Michael Harding is a solvent-free oil-wax medium designed to give oil paints more body, texture, and a characteristic buttery consistency. The formula is based on bleached beeswax, dammar resin, linseed oil stand oil, and Miracle Medium™.
This medium significantly increases the paint’s viscosity and gives it a waxy consistency, allowing for both controlled brushstrokes and textured, three-dimensional applications. The surface takes on a satin-matte sheen that emphasizes the effect of the texture and the application of the paint.
MM3 is particularly well-suited for impasto techniques, textured paint applications, and works that emphasize volume, texture, and surface effects. At the same time, the medium allows for smooth transitions and controlled application with a brush or painting knife.
Careful project preparation lays a solid foundation for controlled paint application in oil painting. Even before you begin painting, you should ensure that the painting surface, paints, and technique are well-coordinated.
The surface should be suitable for oil painting and properly prepared. Canvas, wood, or painting panels are usually primed with a suitable primer to prepare the surface for further work and to minimize excessive penetration of the binder into the substrate.
The choice of materials also plays an important role. Suitable oil paints, appropriate painting media, and clean tools make it easier to work with precision. It is advisable to plan the color palette in advance and take into account characteristics such as transparency, pigment type, and oil content.
Thorough preparation makes the creative process easier and gives you the freedom to focus on color, expression, and your artistic choices.
MM3 Resin Oil Wax is mixed directly with oil paint to specifically alter its consistency, body, and surface effect. Place a small amount of the medium on the palette next to the paint and use it sparingly.
Start with a mixing ratio of about 1 part medium to 4 parts paint. As the proportion of medium increases, the paint becomes thicker, waxier, and more textured. According to the manufacturer, the total proportion of medium should not exceed 5–10%.
Before use, some of the ingredients may settle. If this happens, place the closed container briefly in warm water and then stir the contents thoroughly until the ingredients are evenly mixed again.
Paint mixed with MM3 can be applied using either a brush or a painting knife. The medium enhances textured and three-dimensional impasto effects while also altering the paint’s consistency and surface appearance.
MM3 slightly speeds up drying compared to pure oils, yet still allows time for modeling, blending, and texturing the paint.
Wipe off excess paint and medium after painting. Tools can be cleaned with Miracle Medium, turpentine or White Spirit and then washed out with water and mild soap.
No sealing is required during the painting process. A final varnish should only be applied once the finished oil painting is completely dry. Depending on the layer thickness and paint application, this can take several months to a year.
Finished pieces should be protected from direct sunlight, high humidity, and extreme temperature fluctuations. Use a soft, dry cloth for care and cleaning. Avoid using damp cleaning agents or chemical cleaners.
