MM4 Beeswax Paste is a solvent-free, plant-based wax medium from Michael Harding that gives oil paints more body, texture and a satin-matt finish. It is particularly suitable for impasto techniques, textured paint applications and building up sculptural surfaces.

MM4 Beeswax Paste by Michael Harding is a solvent-free, plant-based wax medium with a high oil content, based on linseed oil stand oil, pure bleached beeswax and Miracle Medium™. The paste was developed to give oil paints more volume, stability and a characteristic matt surface effect.
Thanks to its creamy, buttery consistency, MM4 significantly increases the body of the paint and is particularly suitable for opaque shades where a calm, satin-matt surface is desired. The paint can be sculpted, holds textures reliably and enables both controlled brushwork and expressive spatula techniques.
MM4 is ideal for artists who want to work with structure, surface and materiality. The medium supports a deliberate, tactile application of paint and opens up a wide range of possibilities for creating depth, relief and surface contrasts.
Careful project preparation is the basis for stable, long-lasting results in oil painting. The painting surface, colors and working method should be consciously coordinated before you start painting.
The surface must be suitable and prepared. Canvas, wood or painting boards should be primed to ensure even adhesion and to prevent the binder from penetrating.
The choice of materials is also crucial. High-quality oil paints, suitable media and clean tools facilitate controlled work. It is advisable to plan the color palette in advance and consider properties such as transparency, pigment type and oil content.
Thoughtful preparation creates calm in the process and gives you the freedom to concentrate fully on color, expression and artistic decisions.
MM4 Beeswax Paste is mixed directly with the oil paint to specifically change its consistency, body and surface effect. Place a small amount of the paste on the palette next to the paint and apply sparingly.
Work the paste into the paint using a painting knife or brush. Start with a small amount and gradually increase the proportion until the desired creamy, buttery consistency is achieved. The total proportion of the medium should not exceed 5-10 % to ensure the stability of the paint film.
The paint mixed with MM4 can be applied with a brush or spatula. It is particularly suitable for impasto techniques, structured color surfaces and plastic surfaces. The higher the proportion of paste, the more pronounced the volume and texture.
MM4 slightly slows down the drying of the paint, leaving sufficient time for modeling, blending and structuring. It can be used both wet-on-wet and in built-up layers.
Wipe off excess paint and paste after painting. Clean tools with Miracle Medium, turpentine or White Spirit and then wash out with water and mild soap.
No sealing is required during the painting process. A final varnish should only be applied once the finished oil painting is completely dry. Depending on the layer thickness and paint application, this can take several months to a year.
Finished works should be protected from direct sunlight, high humidity and strong temperature fluctuations. A soft, dry cloth is sufficient for care and cleaning. Damp cleaning agents or chemical substances should be avoided.
