MM4 Beeswax Paste is a solvent-free, plant-based wax medium from Michael Harding that gives oil paints more body, texture and a satin-matt finish. It is particularly suitable for impasto techniques, textured paint applications and building up sculptural surfaces.

MM4 Beeswax Paste by Michael Harding is a solvent-free wax medium with a high oil content, based on linseed oil stand oil, pure bleached beeswax, and Miracle Medium™. The paste was developed to give oil paints greater body, stability, and a distinctive matte finish.
Thanks to its creamy, buttery consistency, MM4 significantly increases the body of the paint and is particularly suitable for opaque shades where a calm, satin-matt surface is desired. The paint can be sculpted, holds textures reliably and enables both controlled brushwork and expressive spatula techniques.
MM4 is ideal for artists who want to work with texture, surface, and materiality. The medium supports a sculptural application of paint and offers a wide range of possibilities for creating depth, relief, and surface contrasts.
Careful project preparation lays a solid foundation for controlled paint application in oil painting. Even before you begin painting, you should ensure that the painting surface, paints, and technique are well-coordinated.
The surface should be suitable for oil painting and properly prepared. Canvas, wood, or painting panels are usually primed with a suitable primer to prepare the surface for further work and to minimize excessive penetration of the binder into the substrate.
The choice of materials also plays an important role. Suitable oil paints, appropriate painting media, and clean tools make it easier to work with precision. It is advisable to plan your color palette in advance and take into account characteristics such as transparency, pigment type, and oil content.
Thorough preparation makes the creative process easier and gives you the freedom to focus on color, expression, and your artistic choices.
MM4 Beeswax Paste is mixed directly with the oil paint to specifically change its consistency, body and surface effect. Place a small amount of the paste on the palette next to the paint and apply sparingly.
Work the paste into the paint using a palette knife or brush. Start with a small amount and gradually increase the proportion until you achieve the desired creamy, buttery consistency. According to the manufacturer, the total proportion of the medium should not exceed 5–10%.
Paint mixed with MM4 can be applied with a brush or painting knife. It is particularly well-suited for impasto techniques, textured areas of color, and three-dimensional surfaces. As the proportion of the paste increases, the volume and texture become more pronounced.
MM4 slightly slows down the drying of the paint, thereby providing additional time for modeling, blending, and texturing. It can be applied both wet-on-wet and in built-up layers.
Wipe off excess paint and paste after painting. Clean tools with Miracle Medium, turpentine or White Spirit and then wash out with water and mild soap.
No sealing is required during the painting process. A final varnish should only be applied once the finished oil painting is completely dry. Depending on the layer thickness and paint application, this can take several months to a year.
Finished pieces should be protected from direct sunlight, high humidity, and extreme temperature fluctuations. Use a soft, dry cloth for care and cleaning. Avoid using damp cleaning agents or chemical cleaners.
