🎩 Steampunk bottle carrier – DIY upcycling with Dixiebelle chalk paints, WoodUbend flexible wooden ornaments & Posh Chalk Deluxe Decoupage

Hello, creative souls!

Today I have a simple bottle carrier for you – with the highly intelligent inscription “men’s handbag”. Quite nice, but let’s be honest – it could be more exciting, couldn’t it? So grab your paintbrushes and let’s get started with a transformation that’s worth seeing!

You can find the full description of how to proceed below the video and a list of the products used at the end of this post.

Cleaning and priming – the base must be right

For me, every good DIY project starts with a clean surface. I use White Lightning, Pristine Clean or Terra Clean from Dixiebelle to remove dust and dirt from the bottle carrier. Simply scrub well, wipe with clean water and leave to dry.

The plastic panel with the lettering gets an extra dose of love: I prime it twice with Bonding Boss from Dixiebelle so that the color really holds later. Bonding Boss is a primer that acts as both a bonding primer and a barrier primer – perfect for difficult surfaces such as plastic, metal or glass!

Industrial look with WoodUbend – upcycling with character

Now comes the exciting part! I rummage through my box of WoodUbend elements – I love turning broken pieces into little works of art.

I use the WoodUbend WUB1395 chain element for the top edge! Glue it on with WoodUglue from Posh Chalk, heat it up with a hot air gun to make it flexible and then press it down firmly. The WoodUglue is a specially developed wood glue that works perfectly with the flexible WoodUbend elements and provides a strong bond once dry.

Color on it – metallic look instead of boredom

The boring men’s handbag disappears under a layer of Drop Cloth from Dixiebelle, perfect as a base under the decoupage. The decoupage papers are slightly transparent so that the color underneath influences the luminosity of the colors in the paper. That’s why I prefer to choose a shade of white.

I pimp the rest of the bottle carrier with Patina Paints from Dixiebelle. Today it’s not rusty, but metallic! I’m mixing copper and bronze for a sophisticated look.

The chain element is also given a layer of Patina Paints to blend in perfectly with the overall look.

Decoupage – vintage meets steampunk

Now it’s time for decoupage! I’m using the Posh Chalk Deluxe Decoupage “His Curios” by Jonathon Marc Mendez – a collage of pocket watches, tools and old tobacco tins. Simply perfect!

The whole thing is fixed with the Posh Chalk Infusor. This infuser not only serves as an adhesive for decoupage, but also as a sealant and is also ideal for dissolving Posh Chalk Metallic pigments.

Steampunk stencil for the finishing touches

What would steampunk be without gears? I work with the Posh Chalk Steampunk stencil and Midnight Sky from Dixiebelle – a deep, almost black.

I use the Premium Stencil Brush from Posh Chalk to carefully apply the paint using the swirl and stipple technique. The Premium Stencil Brush was specially developed for stencils to achieve precise and even results.

Even more dimension with WoodUbend

Now it’s getting really fancy: I’m adding even more WoodUbend elements – including WUB366-7 and WUB6113.

As I don’t want to change the stencilled design, I paint the ornaments before I apply them.

I also apply the glue to the preheated ornament for these parts, spread it evenly, press the ornament into the desired position, heat it again so that it is nice and flexible and press it firmly into place. When flexible, it will fit perfectly to the surface and even to curved surfaces. For particularly detailed elements, you can remove the excess glue, which also dries transparently, with a moistened brush or ear swab.

Finally, I add some depth and highlights with Copper Patina Paint using the dry-brush technique. Simply brush over the raised areas with a dry brush – a magical effect!

Spice up the interior – mixing the perfect stain

Because the inside is just as important as the outside, I mix my own stain. I combine No Pain Gel Stain from Dixiebelle in Colonial Black and Espresso.

Like all oil-based products, this product contains solvents and should therefore be used in a well-ventilated room or outdoors. Wear a mask and gloves if necessary. Incidentally, the smell disappears completely once the product has dried. I stir the product well first and then mix in about 1/1. As I’m working on raw wood here and won’t be doing any extra sealing, I also add a dab of Dixiebelle Big Mamas Butta in Fresh & Clean. The fresh, slightly minty scent also drowns out the smell of the No Pain Gel Stain while I’m working with it.

I apply the mixture roughly with a brush and work it nicely into the wood with a lint-free cloth. The result? A sophisticated, dark look!

Finale: A unique steampunk piece is born!

Beer, cola, cider or lemonade – no matter what you’re carrying, this steampunk upgrade will turn your bottle carrier into an absolute eye-catcher!
