🎩 Steampunk Bottle Holder — DIY Upcycling with Dixie Belle Chalk Paint, WoodUbend Flexible Wood Ornaments, and Posh Chalk Deluxe Decoupage
Hello, creative souls!
Today I have a simple bottle carrier for you – with the highly intelligent inscription “men’s handbag”. Quite nice, but let’s be honest – it could be more exciting, couldn’t it? So grab your paintbrushes and let’s get started with a transformation that’s worth seeing!

Cleaning and priming – the base must be right
For me, every good DIY project starts with a clean surface. I use White Lightning, Pristine Clean, or Terra Clean by Dixie Belle to remove dust and dirt from the bottle holder. Just scrub it well, rinse with clean water, and let it dry.
The plastic panel with the lettering gets some extra care: I prime it twice with Bonding Boss by Dixie Belle. Bonding Boss is a primer that serves both as an adhesion primer and a sealer, and, according to the manufacturer, is suitable for more challenging surfaces such as plastic, metal, or glass, among others.
Industrial look with WoodUbend – upcycling with character
Now comes the exciting part! I rummage through my box of WoodUbend elements – I love turning broken pieces into little works of art.
For the top edge, I’m using the WoodUbend WUB1395 chain element! Glue it on with WoodUglue from Posh Chalk, heat it with a heat gun to make it flexible, and then press it down firmly. WoodUglue is a wood glue specially developed for working with WoodUbend elements.
Color on it – metallic look instead of boredom
The boring men’s handbag is hidden under a layer of Dixie Belle Drop Cloth, which serves as the base for the decoupage. The decoupage papers are slightly translucent, so the paint underneath can influence the appearance of the colors in the paper. That’s why I prefer to choose a shade of white.
I’m going to spruce up the rest of the bottle rack with Dixie Belle Patina Paints. Today, it won’t be rusty—it’ll be metallic! I’m mixing Copper and Bronze for a sophisticated look.
The chain link is also given a coat of Patina Paints so that it blends in nicely with the overall look.
Decoupage – vintage meets steampunk
Now it’s time for decoupage! I’m using the Posh Chalk Deluxe Decoupage “His Curios”by Jonathon Marc Mendez—a collage of pocket watches, tools, and old tobacco tins. Just my thing!
The whole thing is secured with the Posh Chalk Infusor. The Infusor can be used as an adhesive for decoupage and for sealing, and it also serves to mix the Posh Chalk Metallic Pigments.
Steampunk stencil for the finishing touches
What would steampunk be without gears? I’m working with the Posh Chalk Steampunk stencil and Midnight Sky by Dixie Belle—a deep, almost black shade.
Using the Premium Stencil Brush from Posh Chalk, I carefully apply the paint using the swirl and dotting techniques. The Premium Stencil Brush was specially designed for working with stencils.
Even more dimension with WoodUbend
Now it’s getting really fancy: I’m adding even more WoodUbend elements – including WUB366-7 and WUB6113.
Since I don’t want to change the stenciled design anymore, I paint over the ornaments before applying them.
For these pieces, I also apply the glue to the preheated ornament, spread it evenly, press the ornament into the desired position, reheat it so it’s flexible, and press it firmly into place. While it’s still flexible, it can be shaped to fit the surface and even curved areas. For particularly detailed elements, you can remove excess glue with a damp brush or cotton swab. WoodUglue dries clear.
To finish up, I’ll add a bit of depth and some highlights using Copper Patina Paint and the dry-brushing technique. Just lightly brush over the raised areas with a dry brush—I love this effect!
Spice Up Your Interior—Make Your Own Wood Stain
Since the inside is just as important as the outside, I mix my own stain. I combine Dixie Belle’s No Pain Gel Stain in Colonial Black and Espresso.
No Pain Gel Stain is an oil-based product. When applying it, I follow the manufacturer’s current safety and application instructions and ensure adequate ventilation. First, I stir the product thoroughly and mix Colonial Black and Espresso in roughly a 1:1 ratio. Since I’m working on raw wood here and won’t be applying an additional sealant, I also mix in a dollop of Dixie Belle Big Mama’s Butta in Fresh & Clean.
I apply the mixture roughly with a brush and work it into the wood with a lint-free cloth. The result? A sophisticated, dark look!
Finale: A unique steampunk piece is born!
Beer, Coke, apple cider, or soda—no matter what you’re carrying, this steampunk upgrade will turn a plain old bottle carrier into a real head-turner!
