When November is grey, wet and cold across the country, I reach for a world of color that immediately moves something in me: turquoise and aqua tones. They remind me of the play of light under water, of freedom, of depth and of that feeling of taking a deep breath.
To me, turquoise is a color that can make a room feel more spacious. Even small pieces of furniture take on a whole new presence when they shine in shades of aqua, lagoon, or a smoky sea green. I find light aqua tones to be calm and clear, while bolder turquoise brings more energy into the space without coming across as loud to me. It’s a breath of fresh color that flows quietly yet powerfully through the room.
I’ve breathed new life into many old treasures with this color scheme: stools that look like salty pieces of driftwood found on the beach. Chests of drawers that, thanks to their soft patina, suddenly seem to tell stories, as if they’ve already seen half an ocean. Bowls and small decorative pieces that create a maritime boho vibe through the interplay of glass, wood, and turquoise.
Maybe I love these colors so much because they remind me of my time underwater. Where stillness is not empty, but full of life. Where turquoise is not just a color, but a feeling.
And the best part is: No matter which color palette you prefer, turquoise always takes center stage.
Depending on the color line and finish, turquoise and aqua tones can have very different effects. Matte surfaces, for example, emphasize a more subdued, powdery look, while silky or glossier finishes give the colors a different depth and presence. The base, shade, and application technique also influence the final appearance.
This way, you can use color, finish, and technique to create exactly the look that suits your piece of furniture and your personal style.
