MM3 Resin Oil Wax is a solvent-free, plant-based wax medium from Michael Harding that gives oil paints a rich, buttery consistency. It increases the paint application, creates a satin-matt surface and is particularly suitable for impasto and texture techniques.

MM3 Resin Oil Wax by Michael Harding is a solvent-free, plant-based oil-wax medium designed to add body, texture and a distinctive buttery feel to oil paints. The formula is based on bleached beeswax, dammar resin, linseed oil stand oil and Miracle Medium™ and combines traditional materials with a contemporary, solvent-free formulation.
This medium significantly increases the viscosity of the paint and gives it a waxy consistency that enables controlled brushstrokes as well as sculptural, textured applications. The surface is given a satin-matt sheen that emphasizes depth and materiality without the strong reflection of high-gloss media.
MM3 is particularly suitable for impasto techniques, structured paint applications and work where volume, texture and surface effect are the main focus. At the same time, the medium also allows for soft, smooth transitions and calm, controlled work with the brush or painting knife.
Careful project preparation is the basis for stable, long-lasting results in oil painting. The painting surface, colors and working method should be consciously coordinated before you start painting.
The surface must be suitable and prepared. Canvas, wood or painting boards should be primed to ensure even adhesion and to prevent the binder from penetrating.
The choice of materials is also crucial. High-quality oil paints, suitable media and clean tools facilitate controlled work. It is advisable to plan the color palette in advance and consider properties such as transparency, pigment type and oil content.
Thoughtful preparation creates calm in the process and gives you the freedom to concentrate fully on color, expression and artistic decisions.
MM3 Resin Oil Wax is mixed directly with the oil paint to specifically change its consistency, body and surface effect. Provide a small amount of the medium on the palette next to the paint. The medium is concentrated, so use sparingly.
Start with a mixing ratio of approximately 1 part medium to 4 parts paint. The higher the proportion of medium, the thicker, waxier and more textured the paint will be. The total proportion of medium should not exceed 5-10 % in order to maintain the stability of the paint film.
The medium may settle naturally before use. In this case, briefly place the closed container in warm water and stir the contents thoroughly until the components have combined homogeneously again.
The paint mixed with MM3 can be applied with both a brush and a painting knife. The medium holds textures reliably, enables three-dimensional impasto effects and at the same time creates a smooth, controllable surface.
MM3 accelerates drying slightly compared to pure oils, but offers sufficient open time for modeling, blending and structuring the color.
Wipe off excess paint and medium after painting. Tools can be cleaned with Miracle Medium, turpentine or White Spirit and then washed out with water and mild soap.
No sealing is required during the painting process. A final varnish should only be applied once the finished oil painting is completely dry. Depending on the layer thickness and paint application, this can take several months to a year.
Finished works should be protected from direct sunlight, high humidity and strong temperature fluctuations. A soft, dry cloth is sufficient for care and cleaning. Damp cleaning agents or chemical substances should be avoided.
